What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is designed to cover costs and losses that could happen when travelling.

A reason for travel could be a holiday, visiting friends and even business.

It provides financial protection if you were to face certain issues whilst travelling, this could be from loss of luggage to the cost of medical care if you were to fall ill or have an accident.

Is travel insurance a legal requirement?

Travel insurance is not a legal requirement, however, if you don’t take it out and you fall ill or have an accident while travelling, you’re required to pay the bill which could run into thousands of pounds.

Travel insurance can cover the costs of medical treatment, lost or stolen baggage and even cancellation fees.

What is an excess?

An excess is the amount you’re required to pay if you make a claim on your policy; it’s what you contribute before your provider pays towards your claim.

The excess is per person per incident, limited to two excess amounts if more than one insured person is claiming, per trip.

Please refer to the excess amounts below:

  • Bronze excess
    £99
  • Silver excess
    £75
  • Gold excess
    £50

If you have added excess waiver (only available on Gold) to your policy this will remove the excess from any claim. This cover is one of our optional add-ons and if you have purchased this it will be shown on your policy schedule.

Important things to consider when choosing travel insurance

  • Be sure to declare all pre-existing medical conditions of anyone to be insured on the policy no matter how trivial/minor the condition is.
  • Read the wordings and terms and conditions of the policy, take your time to make sure you know what is and isn’t covered. Be aware of the definitions and exclusions.
  • Choose the policy that suits your needs, not just because of the price. This ensures you get the right policy otherwise you might not be able to claim when you really need to.
  • Make yourself aware of the excess, this is what you contribute before your provider pays towards your claim.
  • Know the limits, make sure your policy offers you enough cover to cater to your needs. For example your personal belongings, cancellation fees and medical expenses.
