What is a pre-existing medical condition?
Pre-existing conditions can be related to your physical or your mental health. This could be defined as a disease, injury, or illness that took place before your travel insurance policy starts.
This includes any condition in which you’ve suffered from or have received medical advice, treatment including surgery, tests, investigations or prescribed drugs or medication in the last five years.
An example would be any cancer condition, heart-related or blood circulatory condition, diabetes, high blood pressure, and asthma.
Declaring your medical conditions
It’s always important to consider your health and even more so before you purchase your policy.
When you purchase this insurance, you must declare all your pre-existing medical conditions no matter how small they are, failure to do so may result in your claim being refused.
It’s quick and easy to declare your medical conditions, when you get a quote with us, you’ll be asked if you have any medical conditions to declare. We collect all this information from you during a process called ‘screening,’ our online screening is a straightforward tool to use and once your conditions have been declared and accepted, you can enjoy your travels with peace of mind.

Things to consider when travelling with medical conditions
When travelling with pre-existing conditions, make sure you have enough medication to last your trip and spares in case of emergencies.
Try to keep all your medication in your hand luggage in their original and correctly labelled containers just in case your hold luggage gets lost. You may also need documentation, such as copies of your prescriptions and details about your medication and health. This is if you’re questioned at the airport about the medication you are carrying.
Ensure you check the expiry date of your medication that it will be valid for the duration of your trip.
Different countries have different rules and regulations about the types of medication they allow into the country and the maximum quantity you can take in.
Research your destination in advance to find where the closest clinic, emergency room or pharmacy is located.
Visit the FCDO website in advance for further information on travel health, local healthcare and travelling with medication.
